广州图书馆是广州市政府主办、为所有社会公众提供服务的公益性公共文化和社会教育机构,是一座集学习阅读、信息交流、展览讲座、文献存贮等综合功能和传统文献借阅、数字化网络服务为一体的现代化大型公共图书馆。
1982年1月2日开馆,坐落在中山四路42号,交通便利,环境优雅。馆舍建筑面积1.77万平方米,阅览座位1,758个,设13个阅览室,7个外借处。节假日照常开放。形成由分馆、图书流通站、村级图书馆(室)、汽车图书馆构成的社区服务网络,其中芳村花园等分馆、汽车图书馆以及海珠区图书馆、白云区图书馆、天河区图书馆等区级与总馆通借通还。在全国较早建立盲人电子阅览室。
提供图书、报刊、音像资料、盲文图书的外借、阅览和信息咨询、文献检索、导读、参考等服务;大力推进全民阅读和社会文化教育,积极举办公益展览、讲座、读书活动,形成“羊城学堂”等活动品牌。2012年接待读者338万人次,文献流通1184万册次。网站提供书目查询、图书续借、预约外借、参考咨询、数字资源原文提供、视频点播、公益讲座点播与共享直播等服务。建设和维护的“广州数字文化网”是全国文化信息资源共享工程广州市支中心的网络服务平台。
截至2012年底有馆藏文献526万册,数字资源48TB,形成地方文献、艺术设计、港台版近代历史文献、音像资料等资源特色。自建广东历史文献书目、著者、广州人物等特色资源库。
积极开展对外文化交流,发挥文化窗口作用,与法国里昂、德国法兰克福等友好城市和对外友协、驻穗领事馆等相关机构合作举办展览、讲座、开展图书交换、馆员交流等活动。通过香港歌德学院定期与德国图书馆界开展业务、学术交流。
广州新图书馆于2006年2月20日奠基。新馆位于广州新城市中轴线上的珠江新城,占地面积2.1万平方米,建筑总面积10万平方米,是世界上最大的城市公共图书馆之一。新馆以“美丽书籍”为设计理念,独特的”之“字优雅体造型将成为广州的文化新地标、城市的新景观。
2012年12月28日向社会公众部分开放,开放区域包括首层大厅及北楼1-7层,可借阅文献130万册,阅览座位1100个。提供中文图书、报刊、音像资料、盲文图书的外借、阅览和信息咨询、文献检索、上网、导读、参考等服务。实行免押金办证,并实现一证通服务。
新馆将于2013年6月全面开放。实现藏、借、阅、咨一体化;全面应用无线射频识别技术( RFID )、文献自动分拣系统、自助服务设备,实现高效精确的典藏管理与便捷服务;设置综合服务区、大众服务区、对象服务区、主题服务区、交流服务区、藏书区等功能区域,具有鲜明时代风格和浓郁岭南人文蕴涵。将成为国内开放度、自动化程度最高、使用最便利、提供借阅图书最多的公共图书馆之一。

Introduction of GuangZhou Library
• Guangzhou Library, sponsored by the Guangzhou Government, is a public institution for culture and education, with functions and services as diverse as reading, studying, information communication, exhibition, lecture, materials storing, circulation and digital service.
• On Jan 2, 1982, Guangzhou Library opened its doors at No. 42, Zhongshan 4th Road. With convenient traffic, the library covers an area of 17,700㎡, holds 1758 seats, 12 reading rooms, 7 circulation sections and opens 72 hours a week, including weekends and holidays. It has a network of neighborhood service centers including branch libraries, circulation stations, village-level libraries and mobile library. Coordinated Loan and Return System has been built among central library, branch libraries, district libraries such as Haizhu District Library,, Baiyun District Library and Tianhe District Library. Apart from that, the library is one of the first libraries across the country to establish the multimedia room for the blind.
• Extensive services, such as circulation of books, journals, audio-visual materials, Braille books, reading, information retrieval, consultation, internet access and distance learning, are provided. In addition, Guangzhou Library also plays an active role in promoting reading and education by presenting lectures, exhibitions and reading activities and has formed cultural brands of its own, e.g. Yangcheng Forum. In 2011, more than 3,260,000 readers visited the library, with over 11,190,000 volumes circulated. The Library's own web site, www.gzlib.gov.cn, offers a great variety of services: catalogue searching, reservation service, on-line renewing, circulation of e-books, reference inquiry, information navigation, digital resources retrieval and delivery, video-on-demand and online live lectures broadcasting. Meanwhile, the library is responsible for building and maintaining the web site of Guangzhou Digital Resources of Culture which is the internet platform of the branch center of National Cultural Resources Sharing Project in Guangzhou.
• By the end of 2011, Guangzhou Library holds a rich collection of 4,490,000 volumes and 38 TB digital resources which form its own characteristics of resources, such as local materials, art and designing reference materials, Hong Kong and Taiwan version of modern historical literatures and audio-visual materials. There are self-developed databases, such as the Bibliography of Guangdong Historical Literature and the Celebrities in Guangzhou.
• As a cultural window, Guangzhou Library has taken an active part in international cultural exchange. It has established sound relationships with many sister cities including Lyon of France, Frankfurt of Germany , and carried out sincere cooperation with agencies such as CPAFFC (Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries) and Consulate Generals in Guangzhou via holding exhibitions, lectures and exchanging books and librarians. The library also develops regular business and academic exchanges with the libraries of Germany via the Goethe Institute of Hong Kong.
• The foundation-laying ceremony for the construction of the new Guangzhou library was held on February 20, 2006.The Library's new facility is located on Guangzhou's central axis in Zhujiang New Town. While the floor space of the facility is 21,000 square meters, the total area is around 100,000 square meters, which makes it one of the world’s largest metropolitan public libraries.
• The concept behind the design of the new facility is known as “美丽书籍,” which in English means, "Beautiful Books.” The tiered, or cascading, surface of the exterior walls is a metaphor for the accumulation of culture and history in books. The new facility will become a cultural landmark of Guangzhou's new cityscape.
• The new facility is to be partially opened on December 28, 2012. The area to be opened in December 2012 includes the first floor lobby and the 1st to the 7th floors of the north tower. At that time the collection in the new library will contain about 1.3 million volumes, with a total of 1,100 seats available. Items available for borrowing will include Chinese books, newspapers, periodicals, audio-visual materials and braille books. Basic services such as reference, document retrieval, internet access will be provided. Moreover, the new library will adopt a deposit-free policy for library card registration and a one-card for all departments solution for the readers’ convenience.
• The new library will be completely open to the public in June of 2013. Services provided will include the lending and housing of materials and reference services. Equipped with RFID technology, an automatic sorting system and various other electronic self-service devices, the new library will optimize its collection management practices and provide fast and convenient services. Additionally, the new facility is functionally divided into different service areas, which include general services, targeted services, special topic services, communication and exchange activities, and collection services. The new library is characterized by its distinct combination of contemporary and traditional Lingnan design. It will undoubtedly rank among the best domestic public libraries. It will be one of the most automated and open facilities, it will be convenient for patrons, and it will offer one of the largest domestic collections.
